An Angry Old World

"What is it?" Dahlia froze terrified.

"Just don’t move baby" Vince whispered, crouching down slowly as if a mountain lion was stalking him.

"Vince?" voicing wavering.

Vince's arm extended out as if to ask her to trust him as she reaches and take it for balance.

"The floor's gonna give. You need to lower your center of gravity and disperse your weight. Do not panic."

"What?!"

"Okay that sounds like you're definitely panicking. Please dahlia…"

"How high up are well? The last 6 floors were collapsed under us!!!" dahlia reasoned as her voice shook as the gravity of the situation was hitting her

"DON’T panic Dahlia, Jesus Christ, you are literally doing the opposite of that." Vince exasperated " The floor boards are extremely old so please - plllleaassse just listen for once."

Dahlia listened, lowering herself to her hands and knees as her weight disperses, lessening the imminent seeming cracking.

"Come'on over here baby, closer to the wall"

Dahlia's face looked determined, as she began to crawl to the western style moldering connecting the base boards to the floors when suddenly her knee is met with a sharp searing pain and crunch as a glass breaks in the vacuum of shifting sand and held breaths.

"What is that now" dahlia cries, voice higher pitched than usual.

"Crap"

"Crap? What Vincent?"

"I think you just broke the shadow lens. Oh Crap"

"Oh crap? What does that mean?? Its just an old monocle."

"Yeah… Well.. No.. Its an old angry piece of glass artifact that keeps the old world from slipping in."

"What?" Dahlia starts at Vince incredulously. "Keeps the old world from slipping in?"

"Suddenly instead of the golden sands pouring through the cracks and buried windows, clumps of damp blocks fell in. Following by a trickle of water, then a gentle stream.

"Crap, can you swim Dahlia?" Vince's tone was maddeningly calm, like solutioning a Rubix cube.

"What? W-wait water? We're under the Sonoran desert!!!"

" Yeah… Kinda like a seal. It kept out an extremely old world…"

“Old world—like Cretaceous-old?” she snapped.

"Paleozoic actually," Vince gave a sharp, humorless laugh. "Were you listening to the Hopi guide tell us about the creation story before we came down here? The deserts used to be under the ocean!"
